The Body, Stephen King
Initial Ideas:
I had thought about using the name of the movie in the book cover rather than the title of the novella for my design. The year 1959, in which the story is set in, Op Art movement was prevalent. So I used the idea to show two hands about to slide through one another referencing the method of truce among the boys in the novella to show their bond. There were trains, lots of walking and friendship.
Inspiration:
I decided to use shoes in my design and use the novella title "the body" instead. The idea was inspired by the pile of shoes during World War II that remained as the people perished during the holocaust. The Image is from 1945, a large pile of victims shoe piled outside in Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany.
Versions:
I used micron pen to sketch the shoes and then took the sketch to illustrator to work further on it.
The last design was chosen due to the stepping on the type by the shoes quality of the design. The writer name was swapped by the title of the book in the final design to direct the focus to the title. The shoe was pushed below so it does not press against the edges.
"The Body" revolves around the journey of four boys searching for a dead body in the woods. The shoes symbolize the fragility of life and what is left behind. This concept is inspired by the piles of shoes left behind during World War II, representing the people who perished in the Holocaust.
In the following two books, the overall design idea was similar to "the body".
Gerald's Game, Stephen King
"Gerald's Game" portrays a female protagonist who is emotionally caught between the past and present, while also physically trapped in a remote house. The entire movie revolves around her recollection of disturbing memories and how they shape the person she has become. She is like a mouse trapped between the patriarchal figures in her family.
Secret Window, Stephen King
"Secret Window" depicts the life of a writer residing in a remote cabin after a separation from his wife due to infidelity. The glasses symbolize his true self, revealing the peculiar events occurring in his life and capturing his emotional responses to these events.
