Storytime:
From June to December 2021, I volunteered at Rotaract Club of Charumati in Kathmandu, Nepal. As a volunteer, I would design posters for events and social media content for various festivals in Nepal. This is my three series of images for some major festivals in the country in an attempt to show these families in traditional Nepali attires.
The image shows a loving father and daughter during Fathers day. It is time to normalize the persona of a loving father in a family compared to a cold work-orientated father figure that has no time for their family. A father can infact be kind, loving and caring. I chose a daughter compared to a son since there are still families in Nepal who become sad when daughters are born instead of son. Daughters deserve to be in world as much as sons are.
The image shows family members exchanging blessing during dashain. Dashain is one of the biggest festivals in Nepal that is celebrated for 15 days. During this time, families get together and receive blessing from the elders. It is popular among children to fly Kite during this time. In the word bubble, the kid is saying that, he wants to go out and fly kite.
The image shows brother and sister during the celebration of Bhai tika. Bhai tika is the day in which sisters (younger/older) put tika (colored powder usually red) in forehead of brother and give them fruits and chocolates. Brothers (younger/older) in exchange give gifts to their sister. This day solidifies the bond between siblings. Since I have an older brother, I decided to make the sister younger in the image.
